Elliott Green: Personified Abstraction
September 10th – October 31, 2009
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 10th, 6-8pm

D’Amelio Terras is pleased to present new works by New York artist Elliott Green. This exhibition is Green’s first showing of paintings since 2001. The latest work combines a diversity of abstract elements that transition into and out of recognizable shapes and attitudes.

Green’s paintings create metaphors and poetic conjunctions enlivened with ambiguities or simultaneous understandings. He paints in states of flowing intuition and conscious modification over a period of time until an integrated atmosphere emerges that is complex and surreal, elegant and visceral. He employs a vibrant range of reds, greens, yellows and purples creating organic shapes with graphic treatments that may be reminiscent of a gleeful mouth, an incredulous look, or the outline of a heart-broken posture.

Arshile Gorky’s model of “biomophic abstraction” and the broader influence of artists such as Philip Guston and Carroll Dunham is present in Green’s new paintings. Plunging through moods and meanings, he cultivates and condenses a multiplicity of human emotions into a multi-perspective presentation within a single painting.

Elliott Green has had solo exhibitions at Postmasters, New York, NY; Krannert Art Museum, Champaign, IL; Fawbush Gallery, New York; Hirschl & Adler Modern, NY and more. He has collaborated on works and exhibitions under the Team SHaG moniker with Amy Sillman and David Humphrey.
