Opening Reception: Saturday, September 8, 2001, 6-8 pm

D’Amelio Terras is pleased to present Store A, its third exhibtion of the work of artist Joe Scanlan. The title of the exhibition refers to Scanlan’s Brooklyn based studio and retail outlet which will be restaged in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

Established in 1997, Store A offers a variety of products and services, including Catalyst brand acrylic tears, fake forsythia, handmade snowflakes and dirt. Store A also designs and builds custom coffins and is the publisher of COMMERCE magazine, a critical journal devoted to economically motivated works of art. COMMERCE is produced in collaboration with economist Neal Jackson, poet Anna Lojecs and artists Donelle Woolford and Steve “Canal” Jones.

In the gallery, the Chelsea branch of Store A will featureThis Year’s Model, the newest version of Scanlan’s modular shelving unit which he has been designing and distributing since 1989. To celebrate the occasion, Joe Scanlan and Steve “Canal” Jones have composed an original folk ballad celebrating the idea of art as something that goes away.

Joe Scanlan lives in Brooklyn. He was recently appointed Assistant Professor in the Sculpture Department at Yale University.
