RIKA NOGUCHI
Did He Reach the Moon?
February 17 – March 24, 2001
Opening reception: February 24, 6 – 8 PM

D’Amelio Terras is pleased to present the New York debut of photographer Rika Noguchi.

A clear, brilliant light fills Noguchi’s photographs, transforming banal scenes into atmospheric tableaux where small human silhouettes often appear within a monumental landscape.
Noguchi says that she seeks to “make contact with the universe through photography,” an attitude that prevents her from staging her images but instead leads her to look for what she considers a moment of truth that possesses universal resonance.

The exhibition will consist of work from two series, Dreaming of Babylon and New Land. Noguchi has been working since 1998 on Dreaming of Babylon, which includes images of cityscapes and construction zones from New York and Brazil. The New Land series developed out of work done while Noguchi was a fellow at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where she captured images of islands being built by the Dutch government.

Rika Noguchi was born in 1971 in Saitama, Japan. She lives and works in Tokyo. Recent exhibitions of Noguchi’s work include one-person shows at Parco and at Koyanagi Gallery, both in Tokyo, and at Wohnmachine in Berlin. Her photographs have appeared in group shows at Montevideo in Amsterdam and the Printemps de Cahors in Cahors, France.

A new monograph of the artist’s work, titled Seeing Birds, will be available during the exhibition.
